Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana are southern states that face high levels of poverty and limited access to healthcare. As a result, residents have higher rates of chronic illnesses that lead to complications. This health crisis is compounded by low literacy skills and the lack of health educators who can provide preventive strategies. Unfortunately, morbidity and mortality rates soar. Obviously, this populace would benefit from a mission that would provide better access to proper health care. Moreover, a Wellness Program that addresses literacy challenges could offset cyclic preventable outcomes.
After years of witnessing the physical and emotional suffering of others as a nurse, my heart longed to help those outside facilities. I also wanted to tell these precious ones about Jesus and His unfathomable love without the constraints of a secular setting.
My decision to submit to God and His call to serve the underserved communities came after a year of praying and seeking clarity. During my search God led me to Jeremiah 1:8 (Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord). Without a doubt, I was certain that God had called me to local communities and adjacent states to alleviate the physical and mental pain. Most importantly, I perceived that God wanted me to use these opportunities as platforms to share the Gospel. I have served in the Black Regions of Alabama including Gee’s Bend and Panola communities. The need of the residents were great, but the provisions made attending to their health needs and sharing Jesus were consequential.
Years of nursing, Wellness Coach Training, and a compassionate heart have prepared me to lessen the suffering of disadvantaged communities through health screenings, health education, and wellness coaching. My acceptance of Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior is paramount to any training or experience I received. I would not be able to fulfill this mission without knowing Jesus.
